Mother’s day card/feat Simon Says Stamp

Hello friends,

It has been a really long time since I posted. I have been so busy and winter has not been very easy on the Chandran family. Now that the spring has finally arrived life is coming back “Literally”. I received the new Mother’s Day special edition stamp set (sorry the kit is sold out, but you can buys this stamp individually at the SSS store) from Simon Says Stamp last week and could not get to it until now. Lately I have been trying out new ways of making free hand backgrounds with stamps. I posted a card yesterday on IG with a another free hand background here

Creating the freehand background:

To create the background I drew a template first , which makes it easier to ink blend the starburst. To make the starburst, I drew a circle on right edge of the card and drew rays from the circle to the edge of the cardstock. I hope the image below will give you an idea.

freehand drawn starburst

starburst colored

While drawing the rays make sure that the lines are narrow coming down from the circle and broader towards the edge of the paper. The rays don’t need to be all the same width a little bit of variation adds interest to the starburst. I then used Peacock Feathers and Tumbled Glass oxide inks to add color to the rays. While blending these color I made sure to be heavy handed on the narrow end and got lighter towards the edge. Also don’t forget to erase the pencil markers before blending as they will get trapped under the colored inks.Place the masking paper a smidge left to the pencil line, in order to erase it.

Tip: It is ok if the center of the circle looks unfinished and messy as this part will be covered with the focal elements of the card.

Stamping and coloring the focal images:

I chose the floral and the coffee cup images to stamp using versa fine black ink on a bristol smooth paper. After stamping the images it was time to color the images using Zig Real Brush Markers. Once the images where all colored, I fussy cut them using a detail scissor. It is always a good idea at go over the edge of the fussy cut images with black marker to give it a finished look.

Tip:While inking the edges of the fussy cut image, make sure the back of the image is facing you. the reason for that is incase you hands slip while coloring you won’t ruin your colored image with a black line. I have learnt it the hard way.

Assembling the card:

After all the coloring was done it’s time to assemble the card. You would think this is the easiest part of it all, not for me:). It took me about 10 mins to figure out the placement of the elements on the card and to decide on the sentiment and its placement as well. I decided to stamp the sentiment directly onto the free hand background panel using black ink. I adhered some droplets on the card for some bling. Using a quickie glue pen, I added some unicorn dust glitter on a few of the elements for some shimmer. All that is left to do is to adhere the finished panel to the side folded white note card.

Thanks for stopping, have a wonderful day and happy crafting.

Friend Card/Concord and 9th Peek a Pattern stamp

How to change a solid stamped image to a line stamped image.

Hello friends welcome back to my blog post. One of my favorite things to do with my stamps is to find new ways to stretch it. For todays card I decided to take some solid stamped images and make them look like line stamped images. I recently purchased stamps from Concord and 9th’s new release. the stamp set that I used for this card is called the Peek a Pattern stamp. This stamp set is also sold as a bundle, which includes the die this is what I bought.

Steps to make the card, stamping, coloring and fussy cutting:

On a 8olb Neenah Solar white cards stock I stamped the floral and leaves images using some light shades of ink. I will have the list of products used later in this post. After I had finished stamping all the images, I took a copic friendly multi liner pen in black and drew in some petals and veins for the leaves. This is where it starts to look like a line stamped image. Keep in mind all the flowers may not look the same, but that alright, when you are done coloring they will pretty much look the same. Moreover these stamps are quiet whimsical and that helps with the line art as well. now it was time to copic color and fussy cut the images.

I also stamped the large solid stamp from this stamp set using a warm gray color ink on a kraft cardstock. The idea was to make this solid image look like a tree log. In order for the image to look like a tree log, I drew in some wood grains using my warm gray color shades of copic colors. I have said in my past post as well. I love to create wood grains. I don’t know there is something about wood grain texture. It can be made to look rustic, shabby chic or even elegant, depending the style of your card.

Die cutting and embossing:

When the images were all colored and fussy cut, I moved on to die cutting the frame die friend using a white cardstock and fun foam for some dimention. These two die cuts were glued together using liquid adhesive and the I fussy cut just the word friend from the frame. Make sure you are cutting the tidle for the letter I as well. You don’t want your “I” not to have a tidle :). I also embossed a stitched rectangle on to the kraft cardstock on which I had stamed and made a tree log. This added some much needed character to a rather plain panel. To bring in some more life to this kraft panel, i splattered some diluted white gouache paint. Splater effect makes a project look so artsy, i love it!! For the additional sentiment, I stamped ad embossed it on balck cardstock usng white embossing powder. This sentiment was die cut using a label die.

Putting the card together:

Now that all the stamping and die cutting was done it was time to essemle the card. After fiddling and playing around for a long time, I mean a loooong time, I finalized on to where I wanted the flowers to be placwed on the log. After the flowers were all directly adhered to the kraft cardstock with liwuid adhesive,I adhered the friend die and the additional sentiment . Now it was time to add some sparkel and shine, for which I pulled out some crystia gems and nuvo crystal drops.Iniially I planned to adhere the kraft panel without leaving any order onto a white note cards, but that did not look very cohesive. I cut an 8th of an inch border on the kraft cardstock, which looked so much better. With that my card was all done.

I have uploaded a video on my youtube channel expalining the card. Sorry for some reason I am unable upload that video on to my blog. I am still new to this video thing and trying to figure it out. Please bear with me for some time until i have it all figuted and fixed,

Ellen Hutson Mondo Gerbera Daisy/Abstract painting

Ellen Hutson Mondo Gerbera Daisy:

Hello Friend,

I am so happy you stopped at my blog today. I have been playing with the Ellen Hutson Mondo Gerbera Daisy a lot, and today I decided to use the stamp again to make an abstract flower. If you are interested to see my other post with this Mondo Daisy you can click Here and Here

I love abstract and the impressionist art , Cluade Monet is definitely by far one of my favorite artist from all time. Many of my art pieces that I create using acrylics or oil are infact inspirations from his paintings. Abstract and Impressionism has taught me that art doesn’t have to be stressful. I have learnt that when you you feel whatever you are thinking to create deep in your hearts mind, you give freedom to your hands to bring that thought to life, no matter how it starts to look. Remember, to listen to your heart . You are laying an impression of your hearts desire on the canvas with colors and textures no matter how abstract the end result. My advice have fun, and the best part is, that there is really no rules.

Making the card:

I started with a bristol smooth paper asI knew I will be adding very little water to the paint. and thus I did not need to use watercolor paper. By the way, I used Arteza gouache and a white acrylic paint. I stamped the flower using versamark ink and heat embossed the flower multiple times. I will explain as we go as to why it is important to emboss multiple times. After embossing the image, I spritz the paper very lightly with water, using my Tim Holtz distress sprayer.

Coloring the image:

While the paper was damp, I started layering white acrylic paint on the flower. I did not follow exactly with the lines of the flower, instead kept the general shape of the flower and petals. the white embossing act as guide when you paint. After the first coat of paint I dried it with my heat gun. Here is where the embossing multiple time plays an important role. the acrylic paint starts to fade the lines of the flower away as you pant over it, making it hard for the lines to be visible. Because I had embossed the flower multiple times, when I heated with my heat gun over it the embossed lines came to the surface. At this point I decided to paint my background using ,black, gray and white gouache paints.

Layering Colors:

Between every coat of paint I made sure to heat set it somewhat, do not let it dry completely. Now it was time to do the center of the flower. i pulled out some green shades of gouache and laid it in the center of the flower. I pulled some of that green color on to the petal as well and also added a layer of white paint again on the petals. While they were still set I spritzed it with water and let the colors run and vein out into the black background. this process was repeated the process a few times until I was satisfied.

I fished the card by adding the sentiment Hi which was die cut 4 times and adhered together. Added some dew drops for some extra bling and called it done. I hope you will give this style a try. Leave me comment oar questions below and I will be more than happy to answer!!

Let your heart sing the colors of your canvas!!

The stamp market HBD die/watercolor

The Stamp Market HBD die:

Hello Lovelies, I am back again with another watercolor card, using The stamp Market  HBD die. For this card I first wanted to make a very cheery and bright panel, from which I could cut out the die. In order to do that I pulled out my new watercolor set from Prima in the  Pastel dream palette. My idea was to create a galaxy background, but I did not want it to be dark, like the night sky. Instead I opted for a bright and warm galaxy water coloring. I wouldn’t really call it a galaxy, rather a warm spring sky.

It has been so very wet and snowy the last few days in New York. Today especially it has been snowing since afternoon and the skies have been pretty gloomy and sad looking. I am so ready for spring , and I know we are still in Feb. Well as an artist one definitely  has the liberty to do what she likes. I can make spring in winter, make pigs fly or even make the flowers brown. Like Bob Ross says, “This is your world, you are the creator, find freedom on this canvas”. So here I am finding my freedom of creating spring in winter. Any way enough of my rant back to the card. I made two cards using my painted panel. I die cut the HBD and did not want to throw away the negative die cut panel, after putting in all  the time to color it.

Here is the list of supplies used:

Positive and negative die cutting

The stamp Market die

Step by step instruction to make the card:

I first water colored the panel using the Prisma water color, in some bright and cheery colors. I splattered white gouache and gold paint to give some addition texture the painting. Later when the panel was completely dry. I sprayed it with an iridescent glitter dust for more shimmer. we all need some extra sparkle in our lives. Don’t we ?

I die cut the HBD making sure  to center the die on the watercolor panel. Make sure to hang on to all the die cut pieces safely, you will need every piece. For the first card, I noticed that the white  notecard looked very plain for the positive die cut, so I embossed another white layer cardstock with a polka dot embossing folder. After embossing the panel I adhered the die cut with foam  adhesive for some extra dimension. I popped up the white panel to a white side folding notecard. The addition sentiment was then stamped with black ink and adhered over the die cut using some foam tape. Added some sparkle and called it done.

For the second card I pretty much did the same thing. adhered the negative die cut panel on to a white notecard. This time I did not emboss the white panel as there was not much white space visible. I did the same steps for the additional sentiment and added  sparkle to finish off the card.

Here is a video  for visual learners, like me!!

I hope you will give this bright watercolor a go. Thank you for stopping, have a bright and cheery day!!

Mondo Gerbera Daisy/SCS color challenge

Hello all, another beautiful day to create, well I stand corrected, everyday is a beautiful day to create. Today I am playing along with SCS (splitcoast stampers) color challenge. The color combo is Daffodils, Pear n and White. For my card,  I decided to use my current favorite floral stamp from Ellen Hutson called the Mondo Gerbera Daisy, which  is an amazing large floral stamp, most importantly it  means you have the freedom to color it with whatever medium you like. I have used this stamp in my previous blog pos as welt. If you like you can click here to get more ideas to use this stamp set. The medium I  chose to use is  my Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers, say that 5 times!! Below is a step by step instruction of how I created this card.

Products used to make the Mondo Gerbera Daisy card:

Mondo Gerbera Daisy

  • Zig Real Brush Markers, 067, 050, 047, 045, 062, 066
  • Bristol smooth cardstock
  • Neenah 110 Solar White Cards Stock
  • Watercolor brush, I used the Silver Black velvet no.6 brush. It doesn’t have to be this brush only, you can use any watercolor brush at hand for this type of water coloring.
  • Dew drop gems
  • Ellen Hutson Mondo Gerbera Daisy Stamp and Die set.
  • Glitter cardstock
  • Black crdstock
  • Versamark ink for embossing
  • Brutus Monroe alabaster fine detail embossing powder.
  • Ginakdesigns  connect glue
  • Fun foam
Steps by step instruction:

Mondo Gerbera Daisy

I stamped the Gerbera Daisies on to a 4×51/4 Bristol smooth cardstock with embossing ink and heat set it with white embossing powder. Its is very important to use an ant static powder tool to ward away any stray embossing powder, before you do the stamping. The floral image was  then  colored  using the zig real brush colors and a watercolor brush. The Bristol smooth paper is the best paper that I have found for using Zig watercolor brush, because  the  colors blend beautifully and they are very easy to move around. After I had colored the Daisies I wanted some greenery in the background which I accomplished by loose water coloring with green markers  illusion  . My idea with the  floral image was for it to  looks like a close up photography with hazy  background.

After the images were all colored, I set the panel aside to dry. I then die cut the word  “Hi”, with three layers of white and the top layer with glitter cardstock. Also I   heat set the additional sentiment with white on a black cardstock.  The pop of black color on this card  adds some additional interest. The panel was  finished off  by adding a few dew drop jewels. This colored panel was then mounted on to a fun foam with liquid adhesive and adhered to a white standard A2 notecard. Here is a close up of the finished card.

Ellen Hutson Mondo Gerbera Daisy

I hope you will head over to SCS and play along. There are so many fun and interesting projects to see and be inspired by!

Have a blessed and creative day!!

Mondo Gerbera daisy/Ellen Hutson

Hello all

Ok it has been a really long time since I blogged. I thought what better way to start with a Mondo Gerbera daisy from Ellen Hutson. I am tired of winter and so ready for spring, when I laid eyes on the new Mondo Gerbera daisy it was love instantly. I made three different styles of card with this stamp set. I am sorry if the post is too long, I will try to keep it as brief as possible.

Bright floral background card

For my first  card I decided to  created a background of Gerbera daisy  . After I had masked and stamped the images, I brought out my favorite medium of coloring – Copics. I colored the flowers in three different colors. I looked up on the web to see the different colors of Gerbera daisies and I picked these three colors. I love the Ellen Hutson’s  Mondo flower line of stamps. They are so much fun to color with different mediums. After I had colored the flowers, I added some additional details using Prisma color pencils. This adds a lot of depth and dimension to the flowers. After all the flowers were colored, I colored the background of the flowers with gray markers.

I cut a frame using Hero Arts rounded rectangle infinity dies, which popped up on the colored image with some foam adhesive. I die cut the thank you sentiment using Ellen Hutson’s Large Scripty Thank You, on a  glitter cardstock. The addition sentiment is from the Mondo Gerbera daisy stamp set, which I heat embossed on a black cardstock with white embossing powder.

Hear is the picture of the finished card.

Mosaic floral card

For my second card, which is my favorite of the three. I decided to make the image look like mosaic. The above picture is a close up of the Gerbera Daisy mosaic. The picture really doesn’t do justice to the actual card itself. IRL it is shimmery and glossy. I went with copic colors as a medium of color for this card as well. I stamped the image with Memento Tuxedo Black ink  which is a copic friendly ink. After coloring the image, I die cut a square using Spellbinder’s nesting square die. I then cut the image in four equal squares and adhered to a cream glitter cardstock with fun foam. After adhering the pieces, I spread Nuvo Crystal Glaze evenly on the entire surface of the four square pieces. While the glaze was still wet. I sprinkled some fine glitter into it. I made sure I went to the edge of the square pieces to give it a beveled edge. The end result, it definitely looks like a mosaic. I added the sentiment from an older Ellen Hutson’s, United We Flourish Poppy stamp set.

Here is the finished card.

Soft Pastel floral card

For my final card, I decided to go with some soft Pastel colors. The medium for coloring the Mondo Gerbera Daisy, I chose t go with Prisma Pastel Watercolor Palette. I used Ranger water color paper for the panel of my card. I heat embossed the daisies with white embossing powder. For the coloring of the Mondo Gerbera Daisies, I went with some very soft pink shade. I used a very pale mint color to watercolor around the images. I did some gold paint splatter, with the Gansai Tambi starry color gold paint. I die cut vellum using Mama Elephant Peek A Frame creative cuts and adhered it over the stamped and colored image. I also die cut the large scripty thank you sentiment from Ellen Hutson with a gold glitter cardstock. I embossed a white addition sentiment on a pink cardstock and adhered it on the tail of the letter Y.

If you love coloring and love flowers then. I cannot recommend enough to try out the Ellen Hutson Mondo floral dies. My favorite so far was the Mondo Cherry Blossom, but I have added this one to my favorite as well. Hope you will give one of the techniques or all three!!

Happy crafting

Christmas tags

Hi all, I know how busy you must be, with Christmas just around the corner. What happened to the year, it seems like it just breezed through!! I though I will share some Christmas  tags today for all the pretty packages that will be wrapped and put under the tree. I have never made Christmas tags, because we are not big on giving gifts in our house. Not that we don’t give any gifts to each other just that not the ones that would require packaging.

What Does a gift mean?

We have three children and all their birthdays fall in winter months between October to January. So we decided that they would get gifts for their birthday from their wish list. And for Christmas we give them gifts that we think they need the most, like updating a phone or something that is useful and important. We as a family also decided that instead of focusing  only on ourselves, we would do something for someone or some cause.

Every year we each  put a name of different non profit organizations that we think we should support in a gift wrapped box. On Christmas morning  every year one of us  pulls out the name of the organization we would support for one full year. This year it was the Kind campaign.  This is an organization that helps to create an awareness of  bullying in  schools. As a child I have been bullied at school and I know how it feels to be laughed and mocked at. Our daughters are firm believers of sharing kindness and the impact it has  on them and those they share it with. This was a wonderful cause and we as a family were blessed by it. The Christmas season is a reminder for all of  us that Jesus came as a gift for us, so we may have a second chance and eternal life.

Christmas Tags

Anyway getting back to the Christmas tags. Ellen Hutson every year does a “Tags with a feminine twist challenge” over at their blog. This year as usual they have an amazing line up of designers showcasing their talents. I decided to play along as well. I got so carried away making these tags that I decided to mass produce. One because they were so much fun to  make and two they were easy and fast.

Christmas tags

I made three different tags, with very similar design and style. The challenge was sparkle and shine, so I kept the color palette to minimal and let the gold glitter paper sparkle.

Step by step instruction for mass producing tags

Die cut

I die cut all the required elements using my Cuttle bug and Sizzix Sidekick die cutting machines. The tags were cut using gold glitter paper from Concord and 9th, Neenah Solar white, Licorice black cardstock and Ellen Hutson modern graphic design paper. I also die cut the sentiment merry and bright from Ellen Hutson Merry and Bright die set, Ellen Hutson Prize Stag die and the tree from Concord and 9th Holiday cheer tags from gold glitter paper.

Next I stamped and embossed all the images for the tags. I used Versafine onyx black ink and Versamark ink for the white embossing. The Scribbly circle is from EH bokeh dots, “Merry Christmas” sentiment is from Concord and 9th holiday cheer tags and Happy Christmas from Ellen Hutson Over the river stamp set. After that it  was time to assemble the Christmas tags. I adhered the Merry and Bright on the dotted designer sheet and layered the tag with a white cardstock. The tree tag I adhered a gold tag behind it, so that the gold could peak through the pop up tree and the star. For the Prize stag tag I adhered the  stag in the center of the circle and added the embossed sentiment beneath it. I tied a black ribbon on each tag and I was done. It took me about an hour and half to finish the entire tags.

Hope you will give the Ellen Hutson tag challenge a try and happy crafting. Also don’t forget to share your handmade kindness this season and be the reason for a second chance to someone!!

Love

Ginakdesigns stamp /inspired by pinterest image

Hello, I know it has been a while since I posted. I have been under the weather and totally brain freezed.  I thought it would  be easy to ease back into the crafting mojo using an Image from Pinterest for  my mood board  inspiration. For today’s  inspiration I chose to go with a color palette, copper, brown and blush pink and a stamp set from Ginakdesigns. Here is the image that I chose from Pinterest. I love the soft pink shades with the contrast of copper and browns.

inspiration image

For the card, I chose to go with a stamp set from Ginakdesigns. If you have never bought any of their stamps, I highly recommend to do so. They are amazing quality and beautifully made. I also mixed two different colors of glitters, to make my own shade of embossing powder. Ok onto the step by step instruction of the mood board inspired card.

Supplies used to make the card:

Products used

Step by step instruction to make the card:

image 1

  • Mix distress glitter, chestnut brown glitter and heat and stick powder in a small bowl.
  • Arrange the snowflakes from the sparkling snowflakes stamp set, diagonally on the brown pearlescent cardstock. Stamp using versamark embossing ink
  • Pour the mixed glitter powder onto the stamped image and heat set using a heat gun.
  • On a white cardstock panel, spread the expanding mousse using the shifter tree stencil.
  • Heat set the expanding mousse. It will bubble up and create a fun texture. If you do not like the bubbled texture you can let it dry and it will remain smooth.
  • With a stencil brush or any ink blending brush apply a soft layer of distress oxide ink. The distress oxide ink will leave a chalky effect on the tree. When you take a semi dry baby wipe and take  off the excess ink, only the ink from the raised parts of the stenciled images will come out. This gives a very neat effect. I couldn’t capture the effect very well with my camera. Also keep in mind this effect is only good when you heat set the expanding mousse.
  • On a black cardstock heat emboss the sentiment from the same stamp set using golden peach embossing powder. I think even a rose gold embossing powder would look awesome. Trim it down to the size you would like.
  • Trim down the stenciled panel, and adhere it to the brown glitter base using foam adhesive.
  • Adhere the black sentiment strip over the stenciled panel.
  • I dipped my finger in the mouse and created some texture on the inked and tree stenciled panel to give a soft rustic look.

Here is a close up  picture of the card.

I hope you will try the expanding mousse. Have a wonderful day!!!

Breast Cancer awarness

Hi all, today’s post is a little different from all  the other posts I have done in the past.  I  am focusing on Breast Cancer awareness, as October is dedicated as  “Breast Cancer awareness month”. The cause for Breast Cancer Awareness,  is very  close to my heart. I have quite a few friends and family members who have either survived breast cancer or are in the midst of fighting the battle. I can not emphasize enough, how important mammograms are.  According to WebMD,  women ages 45 to 54 years should have a mammogram once a year. Women over 55 should continue to get mammograms 1-2 years.

I have a dear friend who has fought it hard with courage and is cancer free now for three years. I also have a friend who has  recently been diagnosed  with breast cancer. I know for sure, she too will fight it hard and defeat it. For every woman out there who is fighting this battle, I know it is  tough, but so are you. I made this  card to honor each and every   woman who is going through or has been through this battle. The stamp set I used today is by Ellen Hutson called “Courage”. This stamp set is made especially to benefit breast cancer research. Twenty five dollars  from the  purchase is donated to the breast cancer research foundation.

Unlike every post where  I do  step by step instructions on how to make the card. I decided not to do so today, as  I wanted to keep the focus exclusively on  the  breast cancer awareness cause.

I want to end this post by a quote from Ann Jillian, “There can be life after cancer. The prerequisite is early detection”Schedule your appointment today!!

Faux water color/SSS Beautiful Flowers2/Mood Board

Hi all, on my Instagram page last week I started a new theme called my mood board cards. The idea is  to make a mood board  with  supplies  to make a card. the mood board  can include  colors combo, stamps or even card sketches that  I will use  and  to make the card.  Hope I am making sense:). For this card I chose to create using SSS Beautiful Flower2 stamp set and a color combo for my inspiraion. I also decided to try a new technique for me,  faux water coloring using Copic re-inkers and blending solution. I had an ahha moment when I discovered this. It could also be that this is already being used by other artists out there, which I am totally oblivious about:). Either way I did my happy dance, when I figured this technique out. I did notice some pros and cons which I will mention a little further into the post.

Here is an image of my mood board, and the step by instruction of how I created the card.

Mood Board Inspiration

Supplies used to make the card.
Faux watercolor using Copic Markers.

Faux Water color, using Copic Markers

  • Stamp and emboss the images using detail gold embossing powder
  • Add copic blending solution and the colored re-inkers on  a coloring palette
  • Use watercolor brush to color the image as you would using a water color.

Keep in mind that the alcohol inks do evaporate quickly, so it is better to do the coloring in smaller sections. I  only used  one shade of pink (R20) for the flowers, which I   diluted using  blending solution for a lighter shade. For the leaves I used two shades of warm grey  markers as the W3 is a very light marker to start with and  added W5 for the shading. There is an  advantage of coloring this way, as you will not spoil the tips of the markers due to embossing. But there is also a disadvantage as you may tend to use lot more color than required. This may be true for larger images. Here I used smaller images to color, plus a little drop goes a long way.

Steps to make the card

Mood Board card

  • Color and die cut the images
  • Stamp the Deco Diamond background stamp, using Hickory Smoke Distress Oxide ink on a white cardstock. It does not have to be a complete and well inked background.
  • Cut a circle with a navy blue cardstock using the Memory Box  circle die.
  • Stamp and emboss the sentiment Thank, onto the navy blue cardstock using gold embossing powder. Also stamp the additional sentiment on a white cardstock using Hickory Smoke Distress Oxide ink.
  • Adhere the navy blue circle directly onto the background panel using liquid glue
  • Arrange the flower and the leaves die cut on one side of the circle.
  • Adhere the sequence and crystal drops for some embellishment

Mood Board Card

Mood Board card

I enjoyed making this card and I hope you will give the faux water coloring a go as well.

Happy stamping!!

Hugs,

Preeti
